1 Scope

China's national vocabulary for lithium ion batteries used in electric bicycles. It specifies the general vocabulary and applies to such batteries. Electric bicycles are a mass form of transport in China in a way they are nowhere else - hundreds of millions of them - and the shift from lead acid to lithium in their batteries changed the safety picture entirely. A lead acid battery that is abused leaks and stops working; a lithium battery that is abused can enter thermal runaway, and the fires that follow have occurred in stairwells, in corridors and in homes where the battery was taken indoors to charge. That is the context in which this vocabulary and the standards built on it were written. A common terminology for the cell, the module, the pack, the management system, the capacity, the state of charge and the protection functions is the precondition for regulating any of it, and for a product bought by consumers who will replace the battery from a market stall it is more necessary than usual.
