China's national standard for vertical roller mills used in cement production. It specifies the terms and definitions, the product types, the requirements, the test methods, the inspection rules and the marking, packaging, transport and storage. The vertical roller mill replaced the ball mill in cement grinding, and the reason is energy. A ball mill grinds by tumbling steel balls, and most of the energy put into it becomes noise and heat rather than new surface; a vertical mill grinds material in a bed under hydraulically loaded rollers on a rotating table, which is a far more direct transfer of force to particle. The saving is in the range of thirty to forty per cent, and since grinding is the largest electricity consumer in a cement works, that is a substantial fraction of the plant's power bill. The mill also dries the feed with the hot gas that sweeps the product to its classifier, which removes a separate drying step. What it demands in return is a stable grinding bed, and that constrains what can be fed to it.
