Scope

GB/T 34675-2017 is the English-translated version of 辐射固化涂料中挥发性有机化合物(VOC)含量的测定.

GB/T 34675-2017 gives the method for determining the volatile organic compound (VOC) content of radiation curable coatings.

Clause 1 states that the standard specifies the terms and definitions, the principle, the equipment, the samples, the test procedure and the test data processing for that determination, that it applies to coatings cured by radiation curing methods such as ultraviolet light (UV) and electron beam (EB), and that UV curing and electron beam curing inks and adhesives can also refer to it.

The standard is built of clause 3, "Terms and definitions", clause 4, "Principle", clause 5, "Equipment", clause 6, "Samples", clause 7, "Test procedure", and clause 8, "Test data processing".

Clause 3 defines the volatile organic compound content as the mass of the volatile organic compounds in the paint measured under the specified conditions, and also defines ultraviolet curing and electron beam curing.

Clause 4 states the principle: after the specimen has been prepared, the non-volatile content is determined under specified conditions by a method appropriate to the type of specimen.

Clause 5 lists the apparatus, including a metal flat-bottom dish of (75 plus or minus 5) mm diameter with an edge height of 5 mm, a disposable syringe of 1 mL capacity, an oven, a dryer packed with a suitable desiccant and a balance accurate to 0.1 mg, and it warns that samples containing volatile substances must be handled with care to prevent explosion or fire; clause 6 refers sampling to GB/T 3186 or to an agreed method.

Clause 7 requires three tests in parallel, the dish to be baked at (110 plus or minus 2) degrees Celsius for 30 minutes and cooled in a desiccator before the test, the weighed specimen to be heated at (50 plus or minus 2) degrees Celsius for 30 minutes, and the dish to be heated at (110 plus or minus 2) degrees Celsius for 60 minutes after radiation curing, all weighings being accurate to 0.1 mg.

Clause 8 sets out three calculation methods, the third of which deducts moisture, and makes the first the preferred one because it does not involve measuring density and so has better precision.

Clause 2 cites GB/T 3186, GB/T 5206-2015, GB/T 6750 and GB/T 6753.4-1998; the standard carries ICS 87.040 and classification G 50, was issued on 1 November 2017 and has applied since 1 November 2018.

Foreword

This standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.

1 Scope

This standard specifies the terms and definitions, principles, equipment, samples, experimental procedures, test data processing for determining the content of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in radiation curable coatings.

This standard applies to the determination of volatile organic compound (VOC) content in coatings cured by radiation curing methods such as ultraviolet light (UV) and electron beam (EB). UV curing and electron beam curing inks and adhesives can also refer to this standard.

2 Normative references

The following documents are essential to the application of this document. For the dated documents, only the versions with the dates indicated are applicable to this document; for the undated documents, only the latest version (including all the amendments) is applicable to this standard.

GB/T 3186 Paints varnishes and raw materials for paints and varnishes - Sampling

GB/T 5206-2015 Paints and varnishes - Terms and definitions

GB/T 6750 Paints and varnishes - Determination of density - Pycnometer method

GB/T 6753.4-1998 Paints and varnishes - Determination of flow time by use of flow cups

3 Terms and definitions

The following terms and definitions apply to this document.

3.1 Volatile organic compound content; VOC content; VOCC

The mass of the volatile organic compounds in the paint measured under the specified conditions.

3.2 Ultraviolet curing; UV curing

The hardening process of a paint exposed to ultraviolet radiation.

3.3 Electron beam curing; EB curing

The process of rapid curing of the specially formulated coatings by a beam of concentrated electrons.

4 Principle

After preparing the specimen, use an appropriate method to determine the non-volatile content of the specimen under specified conditions according to the type of specimen.

5 Equipment

5.1 Metal flat-bottom dish

The diameter is (75 ± 5) mm and the edge height is 5 mm or it can ensure that the specimen does not overflow. It is also possible to use dishes of different diameters. At this time, use formula (1) to calculate the mass m of the specimen used for the test, unit in gram (g).

5.2 Syringe

Disposable syringe with a capacity of 1 mL.

5.3 Oven

Warning - In order to prevent explosion or fire, samples containing volatile substances shall be handled with care and shall be implemented in accordance with relevant national regulations.

5.4 Dryer

Packed with a suitable desiccant, such as dry silica gel impregnated with cobalt chloride.

5.5 Balance

The accuracy is 0.1 mg.

6 Samples

Take sample according to the provisions of GB/T 3186, or according to the agreed method; the sampling volume is determined according to the inspection needs.

7 Test procedure

7.1 Non-volatile content

7.1.1 Do three tests in parallel

7.1.2 Degreasing and cleaning metal flat-bottom dishes (see 5.1). In order to improve the measurement accuracy, the dish (see 5.1) is baked in an oven (see 5.3) at (110 ± 2) °C for 30 minutes before the test and placed in a desiccator (see 5.4).

7.1.4 Weigh the mass m0 of the metal flat-bottom dish (see 5.1), accurate to 0.1 mg. Weigh (0.2 ± 0.1) g of the specimen to be tested (see 7.1.3) into a dish (see 5.1) and spread it evenly, accurate to 0.1 mg.

7.1.5 Immediately after the weighing, immediately transfer the metal flat-, bottomed dish (see 5.1) containing the specimen into oven (see 5.3); heat it at (50 ± 2) °C for 30 min.

7.1.7 After radiation curing, transfer the dish into an oven (see 5.3) at (110 ± 2) °C and heat it for 60 minutes. After the heating time is over, place the dish in a desiccator (see 5.4) to cool and weigh the mass m2 of the specimen residue and the dish, accurate to 0.1 mg.

8 Test data processing

8.1 General

Calculate the volatile organic compound (VOC) content of the specimen according to the method specified in the standard. Since calculation method 1 does not involve the measurement of density (other errors will be introduced), it has better precision and is a preferred calculation method. […]

8.2 Calculation method 1

The volatile organic compound (VOC) content w (VOC) (mass fraction) of the specimen is calculated according to formula (3). […]

8.3 Calculation method 2

The volatile organic compound (VOC) content rho (VOC) of the specimen is calculated according to formula (4). […]

8.4 Calculation method 3

The volatile organic compound (VOC) content rho (VOC) 1w of the specimen after deducting moisture is calculated according to formula (5). […]
