1 Scope

GB/T 33290.27-2024 covers oil painting, watercolour and gouache in the export inspection series. These are the Western media, and in China they carry a specific history: they arrived in the late Qing, were taken up by artists trained in Europe and Japan in the Republican period, and became the central medium of the state art academies afterwards. That makes the material relatively recent by the standards of cultural relics work and, precisely for that reason, harder to handle at a border - the objects look modern, the artists' names are less familiar to a generalist than those of the classical tradition, and the restricted lists do a great deal of the work. This part establishes the review procedure for exporting oil paintings, watercolours and gouaches and specifies the requirements for category determination, age determination, comparison against the lists, value assessment and the formation of the review conclusion, with the corresponding verification methods. 5 Category determination
