Scope
GB/T 33290.26-2024 is the English-translated version of 文物出境审核规范 第26部分:壁画.
GB/T 33290.26-2024 covers murals in the export inspection series. A mural is a special case among cultural relics because a mural offered for export has, by definition, already been removed from the wall it was painted on - and the circumstances of that removal are the central question. Detached wall paintings from tombs, temples and grottoes are among the most heavily looted categories of Chinese antiquity, and a fragment mounted on a modern backing carries almost none of the context that would establish where it came from. What the examiner is left with is the painting itself: its technique, its plaster and pigments, its iconography, and how those match what is known of dated sites. This part establishes the review procedure for murals intended for export and specifies the requirements for category determination, age determination, comparison against the restricted lists, value assessment and the formation of the review conclusion, together with the corresponding verification methods. Under ICS 97.195 and CCS Y88, it is written for export appraisal stations and their expert appraisers, for customs officers, and for museums and the art trade.
