Scope

GB/T 32965-2025 is the English-translated version of 钢渣加工和金属回收技术规范.

GB/T 32965-2025 is the Chinese national standard covering a steel slag processing line and what it recovers — the separate handling of desulfurisation slag, converter slag, electric arc furnace slag and refining residue, the dust extraction and the boundary noise, the crushing and magnetic separation equipment, the drop hammer for lumps too big to feed a crusher, the automation and the start-up order, and the iron content of the recovered magnetic powder and slag steel. Whether the line has done its job shows in how much metallic iron is left in the tailings. It replaces GB/T 32965-2016, under the China Iron and Steel Association. In force from 1 March 2026. Issued on 29 August 2025, it has been in force since 1 March 2026, replacing GB/T 32965-2016.

3 Terms and Definitions

The terms and definitions defined in YB/T 804 and the following terms and definitions apply to this document.

3.1 steel slag processing

The process of separating cold steel slag into slag steel, magnetic powder and tailings through crushing, screening and magnetic separation.

3.2 steel slag tailings

The residue after steel slag has been processed and metals have been recycled.

4 General Requirements

4.1 Steel slag processing and metal recycling should adhere to the principles of safe production, environmental protection, and resource utilization of solid waste, and adopt advanced and feasible methods.

An economical, environmentally friendly, and energy-saving treatment process.

Pollution prevention measures should be taken, such as preventing dust, runoff, and leakage.

4.3 The noise level at the boundary of the steel slag processing and metal recycling production line (hereinafter referred to as the steel slag processing line) shall meet the requirements of GB 12348.

4.4 Desulfurization slag from molten iron pretreatment, converter slag, electric arc furnace slag, and refining casting residue should be temporarily stored separately. Steel slag tailings should be piled up and stored separately.

Store them for easy classification and utilization.

4.5 Desulfurization slag from molten iron pretreatment, converter slag, electric arc furnace slag, and refining casting residue should preferably be processed on separate slag processing lines. If the same steel...

For slag processing lines, it is advisable to feed and process materials in different time periods.

4.6 Dust removal measures should be installed in areas where dust is generated during steel slag processing lines. The emission concentration limits for air pollutants should comply with the requirements of GB 28664.

The dust concentration at the workplace must comply with GB 28664 regarding fugitive particulate matter emissions from production workshops with or without complete factory buildings.

Concentration limit requirements.

5 Processes and Equipment

5.1 Basic Process

After the steel slag is cooled to a suitable moisture content in the stockpile, it undergoes screening, coarse crushing, magnetic separation, and fine crushing to remove metallic materials, forming slag.

Products include steel, magnetic separation powder, and tailings. Large lumps of steel slag are processed and metals are recovered using drop hammer and cutting methods.

5.2 Process Flow

Steel slag is dumped onto a 150mm vibrating feed screen by a loader or grab bucket via a crane. Larger pieces on the screen are then magnetically separated by an electromagnetic chuck.

Large magnetic materials are fed by a loader to a jaw crusher for coarse crushing, and then pass through a magnetic separator along with materials that have passed through a 150mm screen for magnetic separation.

Iron is removed by magnetic separation to extract slag and steel. After magnetic separation in the iron remover, the material is separated into oversize ( >10 mm) and undersize by a 10 mm vibrating screen.

(< 10mm), the material over the 10mm sieve is further crushed and de-ironized using an iron remover, and then enters a rod mill for fine crushing and iron removal. The material under the 10mm sieve is then separated by magnetic separation.

It is divided into magnetically separated powder and tailings. The process flow is shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1.Process flow diagram of steel slag processing and metal recycling

5.3 Design Requirements

The design requirements are as follows.

a) The areas of the raw material storage yard, finished product storage yard, and tailings storage yard of the steel slag processing line should meet the storage period requirements;

b) Based on process requirements and actual on-site production conditions, the entire steel slag processing line should be divided into multiple processes, and the design should include steps between each process.

In a storage yard or silo, when a certain process or piece of equipment malfunctions, it will not affect the normal production of other processes.

5.4 Crushing Equipment

Jaw crushers can be used for primary crushing. Rod mills can be used for secondary crushing.

5.5 Magnetic Separation Equipment

Magnetic separation equipment includes electromagnetic chucks, electromagnetic iron removers, and magnetic separators.

5.6 Requirements for Drop Hammer and Cutting of Large Steel Slag

The requirements are as follows.

a) Large pieces of steel slag exceeding 500mm should be processed using drop hammer cutting and cutting techniques;

b) The drop hammer chamber for steel slag drop hammer treatment should have a reliable enclosure structure to prevent scrap steel from scattering, and necessary safety measures should be taken;

c) Cutting of large lumps of steel slag should be carried out in an enclosed space, with a gas collection hood and dust removal facilities installed.

6 Automation Requirements

6.1 Design Principles

6.1.1 The automated control of the steel slag processing line should establish an integrated system of on-site control, process monitoring, and computer management to complete the overall automation control.

Automatic monitoring and control of all production equipment during the entire process.

6.1.2 The design of automated control systems should adhere to the principles of "advanced, reliable, and practical," adopting a "distributed control, centralized management" model.

Starting from the production process, automatic control of equipment is achieved, and the central monitoring computer statistically analyzes and processes information throughout the entire production control process. Reason, etc.

6.2 System Operating Platform

6.2.1 The system operating platform should be equipped with both Type 1 and Type 2 master stations. Type 1 master stations should use programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Type 2 master stations should use...

When using an industrial control computer, communication and data exchange with a Class 1 master station should be achieved through industrial Ethernet.

6.2.2 Through configuration, human-machine dialogue should be realized to complete the control of field equipment and process monitoring.

6.2.3 Online monitoring equipment should be installed at the emission outlet of dust removal equipment to record the main parameters of the enterprise's environmental protection facilities operation and related production processes.

6.3 Operational Control Requirements

6.3.1 The equipment operation mode should be set to three types. local manual, main control manual, and main control automatic. The selector switch is located at the machine. Equipment maintenance or debugging.

The phased operation adopts "manual operation at the machine" and "manual operation by the main control", while the "automatic operation by the main control" mode is used under normal production conditions.

6.3.2 The steel slag processing line involves two upstream and downstream processes. The downstream equipment should be started first, followed by the upstream equipment; when stopping, the upstream equipment should be stopped first.

Downstream equipment can only be stopped after the upstream process is completed. The steel slag processing line has parallel processes that can be started and stopped simultaneously.

7 Requirements for Metal Recycling Products

7.1 The total iron content of magnetic separation powder for metal recycling products shall comply with the provisions of GB/T 30897, and the total iron content of slag steel shall comply with the provisions of GB/T 30898.

As stipulated in the regulations or contract, the determination of total iron content in magnetic separation powder shall be carried out in accordance with Appendix A, and the determination of total iron content in slag steel shall be carried out in accordance with Appendix B.

7.2 The metallic iron content in steel slag tailings should not exceed 2%, and the determination of metallic iron content shall be carried out in accordance with YB/T 4725.
