Scope
GB/T 31896-2015 is the English-translated version of 计时仪器零部件分类、名称和编号 手表外观件.
China's national classification, terminology and numbering system for watch case parts - the external components of a wristwatch, which are what the customer sees and touches and which account for a large part of what a watch costs to make. The standard specifies the classification, the names and the numbering of the external parts of watches, and it applies to their design, their manufacture, their supply and the technical documentation and spare parts systems built around them. The field it covers is the case and everything on it: the middle case, the bezel, the back and its fixing, the crystal and its gasket, the crown and the tube, the pushers, the lugs and the spring bars, the dial, the hands, the applied indices and markers, the bracelet and strap with their links, clasps and end pieces, and the gaskets that make the whole assembly water resistant. What such a standard delivers is not glamour but traceability. A watch is assembled from parts made by many suppliers and is repaired, sometimes decades later, by someone who has only the reference number to go on; a Chinese watch industry that could not name and number its external parts consistently could not run a spare parts system, could not write a purchase specification that two factories would read the same way, and could not support a service network. The standard therefore fixes the terms, groups the parts into classes and subclasses, and sets the structure of the number that identifies each, so that the same component carries the same designation from the drawing office to the repair bench. Issued on 11 September 2015 and in force since 1 April 2016.
