Scope
GB/T 24831-2009 is the English-translated version of 香蕉穿孔线虫检疫鉴定方法.
GB/T 24831-2009 sets out the quarantine and identification methods for the burrowing nematode Radopholus similis (Cobb, 1893) Thorne, 1949. Clause 1 states that it applies to the quarantine and identification of this nematode in ornamental plants, vegetables, fruit and other plant roots and in soil and growing media.
Clause 3 gives the basis for identification, beginning with the English common names recorded for the species, namely burrowing nematode, peppery yellows nematode, slow wilt nematode, citrus burrowing nematode and banana burrowing nematode, and with its taxonomic position in the phylum Nematoda, the class Secernentea and the order Tylenchida.
The same clause describes the species as a migratory root-endoparasitic nematode and lists the symptoms it causes: the nematodes puncture the root surface and enter the cortex, producing numerous dark black lesions on the outer root that then coalesce, with the root cortex shrinking and blackening and, in severe attacks, scarring that girdles the root and markedly reduces the whole root system; in ginger the attacked tissue atrophies and shrinks; above ground the plants grow poorly, with chlorotic and yellowing leaves, fewer leaves, reduced plant height, decline, wilting and even death.
It also records a very wide host range of several hundred species, chiefly monocotyledons of the genus Musa in the Musaceae, with the main host and cash crops named including banana, pepper, coconut, betel nut, cocoa, mango, citrus, coffee, tea, persimmon, ginger, peanut, soybean, sorghum, sugar cane, eggplant, tomato, potato, sweet potato and yam.
Clause 2 cites SN/T 2122 on quarantine sampling of plants and plant products on entry; appendix B is normative, while appendices A and C are informative.
The standard is administered by the national technical committee for plant quarantine standardization and was drafted by the Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine together with the Shanghai, Jiangsu, Yunnan and Shenzhen entry-exit inspection and quarantine bureaux. It was issued on 15 December 2009 and has applied since 1 June 2010.
