Scope

GB/T 22531-2015 is the English-translated version of 野山参人工繁衍护育操作规程.

GB/T 22531-2015 sets out the operating rules for protecting and propagating wild ginseng, covering the terms and definitions used, the choice of environment, the selection criteria, the sowing of seed, the tending of the growing plants and the control of rodents.

Clause 1 states that it applies to the whole sequence of operations by which wild ginseng is propagated and tended.

Clause 3 defines the vocabulary the rules depend on, including original ecological ginseng that propagates and grows naturally in mountain forest, wild ginseng as ginseng that has grown naturally in mountain forest for more than fifteen years after sowing, multiplication, ecological preserved propagation, canopy density as the ratio of the crown projection area to the total forest area, the forest ecosystem, and the vertical layers of trees and shrubs that act as natural barriers in the forest.

The environmental side of the work is tied to three normative references: GB 3095-2012 for ambient air quality, GB 5084-2005 for irrigation water quality and GB 15618-1995 for soil environmental quality.

The foreword records what changed against the previous edition: entries were added to the terms and definitions, the selection criteria were modified, the harvest period of wild ginseng was modified, and conditions for water-soaked seed germination were added.

The introduction explains that the standard is meant to guide quality control and evaluation in this traditional industry, which also bears on the use of forest resources and on the restoration and maintenance of the ecological environment.

It falls under the national technical committee for ginseng products standardization (SAC/TC 403) and was drafted by the national product quality supervision and inspection centre for ginseng, a ginseng research institute and the Jilin ginseng office, with a number of pharmaceutical companies taking part.

It replaces GB/T 22531-2008, was issued on July 3, 2015 and has applied since November 2, 2015.
