1 Scope

GB/T 17980.49-2026 is the Chinese national standard covering trials of herbicides in sugarcane - a crop that takes months to close its canopy, which is exactly the window in which weeds take the yield. The guideline fixes the trial design and the plots, the timing and rate of application, the assessment of weed density and biomass, and the cane yield and sugar content, the calculation of efficacy against the untreated control and the phytotoxicity to be recorded. It replaces GB/T 17980.49-2000, one of the parts of GB/T 17980 revised together in this batch. It was issued on 27 February 2026 and has been in force since 1 September 2026, replacing GB/T 17980.49-2000. The document is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. This document describes the method for field plot trials of herbicides for controlling weeds in sugarcane fields. This document applies to the efficacy and safety evaluation of herbicides used for registration in field plot trials for controlling weeds in newly planted and ratooned sugarcane fields.

4 Test conditions

4.1 Selection of Crops and Cultivars Use locally common cultivation methods and select widely planted varieties. Record crop species (including Chinese and Latin scientific names) and cultivation types. Type and variety name.

4.2 Selection of weeds as test subjects The weeds in the experimental site should be representative, the weed density should meet the experimental requirements, and the weeds should be evenly distributed. The weed community composition should be consistent with the test site. The herbicidal spectrum of the pesticides is consistent. Record the Chinese and Latin scientific names of various weeds.

4.3 Cultivation conditions Soil conditions (soil type, organic matter content, pH, soil moisture, fertility) and tillage practices should be uniform and consistent across all experimental plots, and should meet the requirements of the current regulations. Agricultural practices based on geosciences. Cultivation methods for sugarcane, such as planting types and row spacing, should conform to local production realities and be documented.
