Foreword

This document complies with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Standardization Work Guidelines Part

1.Structure and Drafting Rules of Standardization Documents". Drafting. This document supersedes GB/T 14897.1-1994 "Basic Terminology of Woodworking Tools" and GB/T 14897.2-1994 "Technical Specifications of Woodworking Tools". The following standards are relevant to the technical specifications of woodworking tools. "Terminology for Saws", GB/T 14897.3-1994 "Terminology for Woodworking Tools - Milling Cutters", and GB/T 14897.4-1994 "Terminology for Woodworking Tools - Drill Bits". GB/T 14897.5-1994 "Woodworking Tools Terminology. Square Chisels and Drills". Compared with the above standards, apart from structural adjustments and editorial changes, the main differences are... The technological changes are as follows:

---The term "mortise and tenon cutting tool" has been deleted (see section

2.4 of GB/T 14897.1-1994);

---The terms "polycrystalline diamond tools" and "ceramic tools" have been added (see

3.1.2.7 and 3.1.2.8);

---The term "carbide circular saw blade for woodworking" has been removed (see section

3.2 of GB/T 14897.2-1994);

---A new chapter on "Terminology for Clamping Blades for Woodworking Machines" has been added (see Chapter 5);

---The terms "carbon tool steel end mills," "carbide tool steel end mills," "high-speed steel end mills," and "carbide end mills" have been removed (see [link]). GB/T 14897.3-1994, sections

3.1.1 to 3.1.4);

---The terms "solid end mill," "clamped end mill," "welded end mill," and "combination end mill" have been removed (see GB/T 14897.3-1994). 3.2.1~3.2.4);

---The terms "straightness of cutter teeth" (see 6.4.1,

7.1 of GB/T 14897.3-1994) and "thickness difference of the same tooth" (see...) have been changed. 6.4.3 (GB/T 14897.3-1994) and the term "poor quality of grouped cutting teeth" (see 6.4.4, GB/T 14897.3-1994) 7.4);

1 Scope

GB/T 14897-2025 is the Chinese national standard covering the vocabulary of cutting tools for wood - the saw blades, cutter heads, router bits and drills, the tooth and edge geometry, the tipping materials, and the terms for wear and for regrinding. It replaces GB/T 14897.1-1994, a standard thirty-one years old, and consolidates the series into one document. In force from 1 May 2026. Issued on 31 October 2025, it has been in force since 1 May 2026, replacing GB/T 14897.1-1994.

This document defines the terminology for woodworking machine tools (hereinafter referred to as "tools") and defines the symbols for some of the terms. This document applies to the design, research and development, production, and teaching of cutting tools.
