Scope

GB/T 11586-2026 is the English-translated version of 船舶与海洋技术船舶系泊和拖带设备巴拿马导缆孔.

GB/T 11586-2026 covers Panama chocks, the ship mooring and towing fittings used to guide lines when a vessel transits the Panama Canal. It sets out the type, nominal size, dimensions and materials of the chocks, together with structural, manufacturing and marking requirements.

The chocks are intended for ships that pass through the canal locks with steel tow rope locomotives or tugs, and they meet normal mooring needs and canal regulations.

A note says that Panamax and New Panamax vessels may use closed-type fairleads in place of Panama chocks with a safe working load of 90 t (see ISO 13729). Issued on 30 July 2026 and applicable from 1 November 2026, it replaces GB/T 11586-2018.

Foreword

This document complies with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Standardization Work Guidelines Part 1: Structure and Drafting Rules of Standardization Documents".

This document replaces GB/T 11586-2018 "Ships and Marine Technology - Ship Mooring and Towing Equipment - Panama Guide Hole", and is consistent with... Compared with GB/T 11586-2018, apart from structural adjustments and editorial changes, the main technical changes are as follows.

a) The definition of the term "safe workload" has been changed (see 3.1, 2018 version 3.1);

b) Finite element analysis conditions have been added (see A.3.2).

The following minimal editorial changes have been made to this document.

---9.3 added a note regarding the units of measurement for safe workload values.

1 Scope

This document specifies the type, nominal size, dimensions, and materials of Panama Canal wire guides used for guiding ship mooring and towing lines, as well as structural, manufacturing, and marking requirements.

This document applies to vessels transiting the Panama Canal using steel tow rope locomotives or tugboats through the locks.

Panama Canal Borehole. The Panama Canal Borehole specified in this document meets normal mooring requirements and Panama Canal regulations, and is applicable in Panama. Ships moored inside the canal locks.

Note: Panamax and New Panamax vessels may use closed-type cable guides instead of Panamax cable guides (safe working load 90t) (see ISO 13729).

4 Classification

4.1 Type

Panama cable guides are classified into the following two types based on their installation location.

a) Type A. Deck mounting Panama cable guide;

b) Type B. Panama cable guide hole installed on the bulwark.

4.2 Nominal Dimensions

The nominal size of the Panama cable guide hole is expressed as the width of the cable guide hole opening in millimeters.

The nominal size is available in two specifications. 310 and 360.
