Scope

GB 27897-2011 is the English-translated version of A类泡沫灭火剂.

China's mandatory standard for class A foam extinguishing agents - the wetting foam concentrates used on solid combustible fires, in forest, building and vehicle fire fighting and in the compressed air foam systems that carry them, where the job of the foam is to break the surface tension of the water so that it penetrates the fuel rather than to seal a burning liquid. It gives the product models, the technical requirements, the test methods, the inspection rules, and the provisions on marking, packaging, transport and storage, and it applies to the research, development, production and testing of class A foam extinguishing agents. The requirements cover the physical and chemical properties of the concentrate - appearance, sediment, pH, viscosity measured by rotational viscometer to GB/T 21059, surface and interfacial tension, freezing point and the behaviour after temperature cycling and after storage - together with the wetting power determined by the immersion method of GB/T 11983, the foam expansion and drainage time of the finished foam, its corrosivity, and the extinguishing and burnback performance measured on a standard class A fire. The water used for the tests is that of GB/T 6682, the cotton canvas used in the wetting test is that of GB/T 2909, and the extinguishers used in the fire tests follow GB 4351. Issued on 30 December 2011 and in force since 1 March 2012, it is a first edition. A new edition, GB 27897-2025, was issued on 31 October 2025 and takes effect on 1 November 2026; its foreword records that the differences are structural adjustments and editorial changes, so this edition remains the applicable document for product already certified to it.

1 Scope

This standard specifies the product models, the technical requirements, the test methods, the inspection rules and the marking, packaging, transport and storage of class A foam extinguishing agents.

It applies to the research, development, production and testing of class A foam extinguishing agents.

2 Normative references

The following documents are indispensable to the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition bearing the date applies; for undated references, the latest edition (including any amendments) applies.

GB/T 2909 Natural cotton canvas · GB 4351 Portable fire extinguishers · GB/T 6003.1 Test sieves - Technical requirements and testing - Part 1: Test sieves of metal wire cloth · GB/T 6682 Water for analytical laboratory use - Specification and test methods · GB/T 11983 Surface active agents - Determination of wetting power by immersion method · GB/T 21059 Determination of the viscosity of polymers and resins in the liquid, emulsified or dispersed state at a specified shear rate using a rotational viscometer

Product models and technical requirements

Clause 4 sets the way the product model is formed, which records the type of the agent and the concentration at which it is designed to be proportioned. Clause 5 carries the technical requirements: the physical and chemical properties of the concentrate, including its appearance and sediment, its pH, its viscosity, its surface and interfacial tension, its freezing point and its behaviour after temperature cycling and after storage; the wetting power, which is the property that distinguishes a class A agent from a class B one; the expansion and drainage time of the finished foam; the corrosivity of the agent towards the metals it will be in contact with; and the extinguishing and burnback performance on the standard fire.

Test methods, inspection and marking

Clause 6 gives the test methods for each of those properties in turn, with the wetting power determined by the immersion method of GB/T 11983 on the cotton canvas of GB/T 2909, the viscosity by the rotational viscometer method of GB/T 21059, and the analytical water taken to GB/T 6682; the fire tests are carried out on a standard class A fire with the extinguishers of GB 4351.

Clause 7 gives the inspection rules with the classification of inspection, the type inspection and the factory inspection and the sampling and acceptance criteria for each. Clause 8 gives the marking, which must record the model, the proportioning concentration, the batch and the shelf life, together with the packaging, transport and storage requirements.
