GB 1903.81-2025 is a mandatory national food safety standard for synthetic vitamin K2 as a nutritional fortifier. Vitamin K2 has moved from obscurity to prominence because of what it does after vitamin D has done its work: D increases the absorption of calcium, and K2 activates the proteins that direct that calcium into bone rather than leaving it to deposit in arterial walls. It appears now in bone health supplements, dairy products and formulated foods. Synthesising it rather than extracting it from fermentation gives control over the isomer produced - the biologically active form is a specific geometric isomer, and the inactive isomer is not merely useless but a contaminant that inflates any assay that does not distinguish them, so the specification has to. This standard applies to vitamin K2 as a food nutrition fortifier, chemically synthesised from vitamin K3 with a terpene alcohol, or from vitamin K3 with farnesol and geraniol. As a GB it is compulsory. It is written for vitamin manufacturers, for the supplement, dairy and formulated food producers using it, and for the authorities enforcing what may be added to food in China.
