GB 1886.373-2023 is the Chinese national food safety standard for the food additive sodium methoxide obtained by reacting methanol with metallic sodium or sodium hydroxide, then purifying, removing methanol and dehydrating.

It gives the molecular formula CH3ONa and the relative molecular mass 54.02, calculated from the 2018 international relative atomic masses. The sensory requirement is a white powder, spread on a clean dry white porcelain plate and observed under natural light.

The physical and chemical table asks for alkalinity of at least 97.0%, not more than 0.4% sodium carbonate and 1.7% sodium hydroxide, and limits of 3.0 mg/kg total arsenic, 2.0 mg/kg lead and 1.0 mg/kg total mercury, each checked by a method of Appendix A. It was issued on 6 September 2023 and has applied since 6 March 2024.
