Scope
GB 16005-2009 is the English-translated version of 碘缺乏病病区划分.
GB 16005-2009 specifies the criteria for determining whether an area of China is endemic for iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) and for classifying the type of endemic area, and applies to that determination and classification.
Taking the township as the unit, an area is endemic when the median iodide content of drinking water is below 10 µg/L, the median urinary iodine of children aged 8 to 10 is below 100 µg/L with more than 20% of samples below 50 µg/L, and the goitre rate of those children exceeds 5%; where iodised salt is already used, the water and goitre indicators suffice.
Endemic areas are graded as mild, moderate or severe on median urinary iodine, goitre rate and the presence of endemic cretinism, and the standard sets the sampling survey design (five villages per township, five water sources per village, 40 schoolchildren per village) and the test methods by reference to GB/T 5750, WS/T 107, WS 276 and WS 104.
It replaces GB 16005-1995, adding normative references and sampling methods, restricting the examined population to children aged 8 to 10 and adding the frequency distribution of urinary iodine.

Clause 4 of this standard is recommended; the remainder is mandatory.
This standard replaces GB 16005-1995, Standard for delimitation of the endemic areas of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD).
Compared with GB 16005-1995, the main changes are as follows:
- normative references have been added;
- sampling and survey methods have been added;
- of the two population groups examined for goitre rate and urinary iodine, only children aged 8 to 10 years have been retained, and the goitre rate indicator for children aged 7 to 14 years has been deleted;
- some individual adjustments have been made to the table of criteria for classifying endemic areas of iodine deficiency disorders, and the frequency distribution of urinary iodine has been added.
This standard was proposed by and is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health.
