Foreword

1 Scope

GB 1588 is the product standard for the medical glass thermometer - the clinical thermometer with a constriction that holds the reading until it is shaken down. It sets the requirements for the measuring range and scale, the maximum permissible error, the response time, the constriction's behaviour, the glass and the filling, and the mechanical robustness, together with the test methods, the periodic inspection and the marking and instructions. The long lead time to 1 May 2026 reflects the transition away from mercury filling under the Minamata Convention. Issued on 29 April 2024, replacing GB 1588-2001.
