Scope
GB 1588-2024 is the English-translated version of 医用玻璃体温计.
GB 1588 is the product standard for the medical glass thermometer - the clinical thermometer with a constriction that holds the reading until it is shaken down. It sets the requirements for the measuring range and scale, the maximum permissible error, the response time, the constriction's behaviour, the glass and the filling, and the mechanical robustness, together with the test methods, the periodic inspection and the marking and instructions. The long lead time to 1 May 2026 reflects the transition away from mercury filling under the Minamata Convention. Issued on 29 April 2024, replacing GB 1588-2001. This page is published from the official record of the standard held by the Chinese standards administration: the identification, the dates, the classification and the edition it replaces are taken from there. The clause text, the tables and the numeric limits are not reproduced on this page - they are in the document itself, which is delivered in full in English translation.

--- Changed the scope of application of the standard (see Chapter 1, Chapter 1 of the:2001 edition);
--- Deleted the contents of anus (veterinary) and neonatal rod type, and adjusted the requirements for measurement sites (see 4:1:1, 3:1 of the:2001 edition);
--- Changed the requirements for basic dimensions (see 4:1:2, 4:1 of the:2001 edition);
--- Changed the stress requirements (see 4:2:8, 4:10 of the:2001 edition);
--- Unified the requirements for the width of the glaze band of glass tubes (see 4:2:9, 4:2:4 of the:2001 edition);
--- Changed the requirements for scale plates (see 4:4, 4:7 of the:2001 edition);
--- Changed the requirements for the width of the scale lines of the rod-type glass thermometer (see 4:6:2, 4:9:2 of the:2001 edition);
--- The test method for bubbles has been changed (see 5:3, 5:5:2 of the:2001 edition);
--- Changed the test method for the difficulty of temperature-sensitive liquid column to be thrown off (see 5:4:4, 5:14 of the:2001 edition);
--- Deleted the content of batch inspection (see 6:2 of the:2001 edition);
--- Changed the sampling plan for periodic inspection of indications (see 6:3, 6:3:3 of the:2001 edition);
--- Deleted the contents of packaging, transportation and storage (see Chapter 8 of the:2001 edition);
--- Deleted the content of quality assurance (see Chapter 9 of the:2001 edition): Please note that some of the contents of this document may involve patents: The issuing organization of this document does not assume the responsibility for identifying patents: This document is proposed and coordinated by the State Food and Drug Administration: The previous versions of this document and the documents it replaces are as follows:
