YY 9706.256 is the mandatory Chinese standard for clinical thermometers used to measure body temperature, covering the electronic contact and non-contact instruments that have replaced mercury. It sets the particular requirements for basic safety and essential performance on top of the general medical electrical safety standard, covering the accuracy of the measurement and the conditions under which it holds, the site of measurement and how a reading is adjusted to it, the response time and the information given to the user. Temperature screening became a public matter in China during the pandemic years, and the reliability of non-contact instruments was tested in public. Being a YY standard without the /T suffix, compliance is compulsory. The 2023 edition replaces YY 0785-2010 and takes effect in May 2026.
