The document specifies the lightning protection technical requirements and test methods for smart multifunctional poles (towers) that carry communication base stations.

It applies to the design, quality assessment and testing of the lightning protection and earthing systems of such poles. Smart multifunctional poles (towers) of other types may also follow it for their lightning protection and earthing systems.

Designers of poles and towers, manufacturers, installers, inspection bodies and the operators who own the sites can use it. It is a voluntary industry standard, as the /T in the code shows, approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. YD/T 6940-2026 was issued on 1 June 2026 and takes effect on 1 September 2026. It is a new standard.
