Chinese ancient and modern place name data description specification

1 Scope

This standard specifies the composition, data structure description, core elements of the data and description rules for the description of ancient and modern place names in China.

This standard is applicable to data format specification control and database establishment in the data format exchange of ancient and modern place names in China.

3 Terms and definitions

The following terms and definitions apply to this document.

Place name

The proper name given to each geographic entity by people.

Standard place name

It is written in a standardized language and the full name of the place is officially recognized.

Place name abbreviation A simple appellation of a place name that is officially recognized or agreed upon.

Place name alias

The standard name of a geographic entity and other current names other than its abbreviation.

Present place name

Place names currently in use.
