SH/T 1853-2026 specifies a method for determining trace thiophene in petroleum benzene. The analysis is carried out by gas chromatography with a sulfur selective detector, which responds to sulfur compounds and so allows thiophene to be measured even when it is present only in very small amounts alongside the benzene.

The standard is meant for benzene producers and refineries, for buyers of petroleum benzene, and for analytical and quality control laboratories. It is a voluntary standard, as shown by the /T in its code. It was approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, issued on 16 April 2026 and takes effect on 1 November 2026. It is a new standard.
