NB/T 20389-2016 is the Chinese energy industry standard covering the intake and discharge tunnels that serve a nuclear power plant. It sets out their structural design and the requirements placed on construction monitoring and on operation.

The tunnels in view are of reinforced concrete and are driven mainly by open excavation, drilling and blasting, or shield tunnelling; similar tunnels, buried culverts and channels at a nuclear power plant may follow the same rules.

Directly buried precast concrete pipe, drainage tunnel structures with a steel lining set in rock and soil, and the primary support used while a tunnel is being formed all lie outside it.

It rests on GB 50010, GB 50011, GB 50108, GB 50446-2008, GB/T 50476, NB/T 20012 and NB/T 20105. Issued on 5 February 2016, it has applied since 1 July 2016.
