NB/T 11538-2024 gives a Chinese energy industry procedure for determining the hydrogen sulfide content of coal seams by the desorption method.
It describes the instruments and materials, collection of coal samples in boreholes, measurement steps, data processing and the evaluation and reporting of results, and it splits the content into desorbed, lost and residual hydrogen sulfide volumes under standard conditions.
Informative annexes supply sampling records, desorption and pH record sheets, a residual determination table and report forms. It is not intended for hydraulic slag sampling boreholes or boreholes where hydrogen sulfide is ejected. Issued on 24 May 2024, it has applied since 24 November 2024.

1 Scope
This document specifies the general provisions, instruments and materials, sample collection, determination methods and procedures, data Processing and analysis, measurement results and evaluation, measurement reports.
This document is applicable to the determination of hydrogen sulfide content in coal seams containing hydrogen sulfide using the desorption method.
This document is not applicable to the determination of hydrogen sulfide content in hydraulic slag sampling drilling holes, hydrogen sulfide ejection drilling holes, etc.

3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1 Hydrogen sulfide content of coal seam
The volume of hydrogen sulfide stored per unit mass of coal under standard conditions.
3.2 Desorbed hydrogen sulfide volume
Under standard conditions, the volume of hydrogen sulfide desorbed from the coal sample loaded into the coal sample tank after sampling.
3.3 Lost hydrogen sulfide volume
Under standard conditions, the volume of hydrogen sulfide lost due to escape from the start of sampling to the sealing of the coal sample tank.
3.4 Residual hydrogen sulfide volume
The volume of hydrogen sulfide remaining after natural desorption of hydrogen sulfide in coal samples under standard conditions.
3.5 Sampling time
The actual time taken for the coal sample to be peeled off from the bottom of the hole and then loaded into the coal sample tank and begin desorption measurement.
3.6 Fixed-point sampling
A method of obtaining samples by collecting samples at a certain location through specific means or conditions without being affected by mixing.
