Scope
HJ 444-2008 is the English-translated version of 清洁生产标准 味精工业.
HJ 444-2008 is the Chinese cleaner production standard for the monosodium glutamate (MSG) industry, the fermentation plants that turn starch or sugar into glutamic acid and MSG. MSG production uses large amounts of raw material, water and energy and generates high-strength wastewater, so the environmental authorities set benchmarks against which a plant's cleaner production audit and performance are judged. Like the other HJ cleaner production standards, it grades a plant's performance in three levels, from international advanced to the domestic basic level, with indicators for production process and equipment, resource and energy use, the product, pollutant generation, waste recycling and environmental management. Energy consumption, COD and ammonia nitrogen are determined by the national methods it cites (GB 2589, GB 11914 and GB 7478). Issued by the Ministry of Environmental Protection on 27 September 2008, it has applied since 1 November 2008.
