1 Scope

China's national standard for ordinary concrete small blocks. Concrete blockwork replaced fired clay brick across much of Chinese construction for a reason of national policy as much as economy: brickmaking consumed arable topsoil and a great deal of firing energy, and blocks made from cement, aggregate and often industrial by-products consume neither. A block is also larger than a brick, so a wall goes up faster with less mortar and less labour. The properties that matter are compressive strength, which sets what the wall can carry; density, which divides the load-bearing blocks from the lighter insulating ones; and drying shrinkage, which is the block's characteristic defect - concrete shrinks as it cures, and a block laid before it has finished doing so cracks the wall it is in, which is why the age at which blocks may be used is a real requirement.
