Medical absorbent cotton comes in two types. sterile and non-sterile. Because medical absorbent cotton has high absorbency, it may be used to sterilize with ethylene oxide. Bacteria, through the adsorption of ethylene oxide, pose a significant risk to patients and medical staff; therefore, it is recommended to strengthen the control of ethylene oxide residue levels. For non-sterile medical absorbent cotton, the supplier provides bioburden data as the basis for determining sterilization parameters during sterilization by the medical institution. 1 Scope

GB/T 46936-2025 is the Chinese national standard covering surgical cotton wool - the absorbency and the speed of wetting, the freedom from residual fat, bleach and foreign matter, the fluorescence that betrays optical brighteners, and the microbiological state. First edition, in force from 1 January 2027. It was issued on 31 December 2025 and takes effect on 1 January 2027, as a first edition. The document is under the responsibility of the Standardization Administration of China.
