1 Scope
This document describes the use of pre-column derivatization high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) for the detection of D-/L-alanine, D-/L-serine, and D-/L-proline.

The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1 Free chiral amino acids
A naturally occurring free amino acid that does not combine with other amino acids to form proteins or peptides.
Note 1.Includes free L-amino acids and free D-amino acids.
Note 2.This category of amino acids does not include hydrolyzed amino acids produced by chemical or enzymatic hydrolysis of proteins.
