Introduction

Diluted aqueous solutions of organic acids (such as acetic acid) can corrode a variety of metals. Therefore, it is necessary to identify and control the acidity of the final product.

content.

Ethanol samples may contain organic acids during the production process (including handling, addition of additives, sample deterioration, or contamination). These substances...

The content can be determined by titration with a strong alkaline solution.

The total acid number is a numerical result that measures the amount of acid in a sample. It is used for quality control of long-term corrosion issues in the final product.

Due to its properties, the final product obtained by mixing ethanol with other fuels requires a limit on acid value.

Determination of total acid value of petroleum products and other liquid ethanol Potentiometric titration Warning – Users of this document should have practical experience in formal laboratory work. The use of this document may involve certain hazardous activities.

This document does not address all potential safety issues related to materials, equipment, and operations. Users are responsible for taking appropriate safety and health precautions.

Measures shall be taken and the conditions stipulated in relevant national laws and regulations shall be guaranteed.

3 Terms and Definitions

The following terms and definitions apply to this document.

Total acidity

The total amount of acidic compounds in the sample that can be titrated with a strong alkali solution, expressed as acetic acid.

acidity

The total amount of acidic compounds in the sample that can be titrated with a strong alkali solution after the sample is purified with nitrogen to remove carbon dioxide, expressed as acetic acid.

4 Principles

The sample was titrated with NaOH standard solution, and the equivalence point was determined using an automatic volumetric potentiometric titrator. The results were reported per unit volume of sample.

The mass (mg) of the equivalent acetic acid in the sample is expressed in milligrams per liter (mg/L); if the density of the sample is known, it can be reported as a mass fraction.
