Scope

GB/T 43587-2023 is the English-translated version of 老人鞋.

China's national standard for footwear for older people. It specifies the technical requirements and the determination of results. The category exists because falls are the leading cause of injury death among older people, and footwear is one of the few contributing factors that can be changed by buying something. The requirements follow directly from the fall mechanism. Slip resistance is the first, measured on the surfaces and in the conditions where falls actually occur. Fit and fastening are the second: a shoe that cannot be put on while seated will be worn unfastened, and a loose shoe is a trip hazard, which is why the standard addresses the closure as much as the sole. Sole geometry is the third - a thick soft sole degrades the wearer's sense of the ground, and a raised heel or a heavy shoe alters gait. And the last is the toe spring and the sole edge, which are what catch on a threshold.
