Scope

GB/T 43488-2023 is the English-translated version of 累托石.

China's national standard for attapulgite. It specifies the classification, the technical requirements and the test methods. Attapulgite - palygorskite - is a clay unlike the others: its crystals are needles rather than plates, and that shape is the origin of everything it is used for. A suspension of needles builds a random three-dimensional network that thickens the liquid and holds solids in suspension, and unlike the plate clays it does so almost regardless of salinity, which is why it is the thickener in saltwater drilling muds where bentonite fails. The needle structure also has channels running along it that make the mineral highly absorbent, which is the basis of its use in cat litter, as an oil and grease absorbent, and as a carrier for pesticides and feed additives. China holds among the largest deposits, principally in Jiangsu and Anhui, which is why the material is standardised here.

4 Categories

Rectorite is divided into three categories according to its uses: rectorite for petroleum catalytic cracking carriers, rectorite for casting coating suspension additives and rectorite for drilling mud: Rectorite, among which rectorite used as suspension aid for casting coatings, is divided into sodium-based rectorite and lithium-based rectorite according to the properties of rectorite:

5 Technical requirements

1 The physical and chemical properties of rectorite used as a carrier for petroleum catalytic cracking should comply with the requirements in Table 1:
