Water vapour transmission rate is a key property of films used in food packaging, pharmaceuticals, electronics and barrier materials. This standard, Part 6 of the series on plastic film and sheeting, specifies an ionization mass spectrometer method for determining it. It adopts an international standard.

Film and sheet producers, packaging converters, barrier coating developers, materials research laboratories and quality teams use such methods to characterise product performance or compare materials. Instrument suppliers and test houses that offer permeation measurements will also refer to it.

It is a recommended (GB/T) standard, so it is voluntary unless a contract or product specification cites it. It was issued on 31 December 2025 and took effect on 1 July 2026, so it is now in force.
