Scope

GB/T 4138-2024 is the English-translated version of 稀土镁硅铁合金.

China's national standard for rare earth ferrosilicon magnesium alloy. It specifies the classification, the technical requirements and the test methods. This is the nodulariser: the alloy added to molten iron to make ductile iron, in which graphite forms as spheres rather than flakes and the metal gains the toughness that grey iron lacks. Magnesium is what does it, and adding magnesium to molten iron is difficult because it boils at 1090 degrees C, far below the iron's temperature, so pure magnesium added to a ladle erupts. Alloying it with ferrosilicon dilutes and moderates the reaction so that the magnesium dissolves rather than flashing off. The rare earth addition alongside it neutralises the trace elements - lead, bismuth, antimony, titanium - that interfere with nodule formation and that arrive with scrap steel in the charge. Between them they make ductile iron reliably producible from a variable feedstock, which is why the alloy is specified as a product.

1 Scope

This document specifies the classification, technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules and packaging, marking, transportation and storage of rare earth magnesium ferrosilicon alloy products: and accompanying documents: This document is applicable to the preparation of light rare earth magnesium ferrosilicon alloys and yttrium-based heavy rare earth magnesium ferrosilicon alloys used as spheroidizers and vermicularizers by the melt-matching method:
