Scope
GB/T 36591-2018 is the English-translated version of 硬质合金制品的涂层金相检测方法.
GB/T 36591-2018 describes how to examine the coatings on cemented carbide products with metallographic methods.
It covers the instruments, including a metallographic microscope of 1000 times or more with a standard micrometer, sample preparation equipment and a Rockwell hardness tester, and the preparation of samples, cut perpendicular to the coated face, mounted, ground on diamond discs and polished.
It defines the white phase, a bond phase that can form at the interface between substrate and coating, and draws on ISO 4499-4 for porosity, carbon defects and eta phase.
It applies to the metallographic examination of coatings on cemented carbide products, and is used by producers and their quality laboratories. It was issued on 17 September 2018 and has applied since 1 June 2019.

3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions defined in ISO 4499-4:2016 apply to this document.
3.1 White phase
A continuous or intermittent bond phase that occurs at the interface between the substrate and the coating.
4 Instruments and equipment
4.1 Metallographic microscopes of 1000 times and above, or other instruments with appropriate magnification and ability to observe and measure, require an accuracy of 0.1 µm, It is equipped with a standard micrometer and meets the requirements for metrological verification.
4.2 Equipment for preparing samples.
4.3 Rockwell hardness tester.
5 Sample preparation
5.1 Sampling conditions
Cut perpendicular to the coated side of the cemented carbide article.
5.2 Grinding and polishing of the sample
The sample is inlaid with a metallized inlay material with a high hardness. Hold the sample and use the 120 mesh, 220 mesh, 500 mesh diamond grinding disc to study Grind and polish with a diamond polish.
