3.1 disposable tableware

Single-use utensils intended for dining or similar purposes.

NOTE. This includes disposable meal boxes, plates, dishes, knives, forks, spoons, chopsticks, bowls, cups, buckets, jars, pots, lids, etc., as well as disposable liner tableware with outer tray. It also includes food packaging intended for dining or similar purposes. However, it excludes food packaging without an intended dining or similar purpose, such as fresh food trays, yogurt cups, jelly cups, etc., and also excludes food packaging used solely for food preservation, display, storage, or sealing purposes, such as biscuit liners, cake boxes, etc.

5.1 Appearance

The appearance shall meet the following requirements.

a) normal color;

b) no cracks or filling defects;

c) surface free of oil, dust, mold, and other foreign matter;

d) smooth, clean surface with uniform texture, free of scratches, wrinkles, peeling, delamination, cracks, and perforations;

e) colored tableware free of discoloration, fading, uneven color (except where decorative requirements apply), stains, etc.;

f) if the tableware surface is coated, the coated surface shall be free of runs, peeling, cracks, blisters, etc.;

g) free of foreign matter, blisters, mold defects, burrs, expansion, and other defects.

5.2 Structure

The structure shall meet the following requirements.

a) smooth and regular edges;

b) for products with lids, the lid shall close smoothly and easily, and the container and lid shall match;

c) for products with retractable lids, the lid shall have a snap fastener;

d) for disposable tableware with container functions, it shall be stable when laid flat.

5.3 Use performance

5.3.1 Volume deviation

The volume deviation of tableware such as disposable meal boxes, bowls, cups, jars, and pots with container functions shall not exceed 5 %.

NOTE. Volume deviation requirements only apply to disposable tableware with container functions.

It does not apply to disposable tableware without container functions such as knives, forks, spoons, chopsticks, plates, trays, and liners.

5.3.2 Load-bearing capacity

The height change of tableware such as disposable meal boxes, bowls, cups, and jars before and after load bearing shall not exceed 5 %.

NOTE. The load-bearing test only applies to disposable tableware such as meal boxes, bowls, cups, and jars that may be stacked or handled after containing food. It does not apply to knives, forks, spoons, chopsticks, plates, dishes, or disposable liner tableware with outer tray.

5.3.3 Drop performance

There shall be no cracks.

5.3.4 Lid folding performance

For disposable tableware with lids and containers integrated, there shall be no cracks or damage after the folding test.

NOTE. The lid folding test only applies to disposable tableware with lids and containers integrated.

It does not apply to disposable tableware such as meal boxes, bowls, cups, plates, dishes, knives, forks, spoons, and chopsticks with separate lids or no lids.

5.3.5 Bending performance

For disposable tableware such as forks and spoons that need to be bent and secured for normal use, there shall be no breakage or damage after the bending test, and it shall not affect use.

5.3.6 Heat resistance

5.3.6.1 Hot water resistance

After the hot water resistance test, disposable tableware shall not deform, peel, or wrinkle. For tableware with container functions, there shall be no deformation, seepage, or leakage.

NOTE. The hot water resistance test only applies to disposable tableware such as boxes, cups, and bowls that may hold hot food and drinks. It does not apply to disposable tableware such as plates, dishes, knives, forks, spoons, and chopsticks that do not require heat resistance, nor to disposable tableware labeled as non-heat-resistant.

5.3.6.2 Heat oil resistance

After the heat oil resistance test, disposable tableware shall not deform, peel, or wrinkle.

For tableware with container functions, there shall be no seepage or leakage.

NOTE. The heat oil resistance test only applies to disposable tableware such as boxes and bowls that may hold hot dishes or food. It does not apply to disposable tableware such as plates, dishes, knives, forks, spoons, chopsticks, and water cups that do not require heat oil resistance, nor to disposable tableware labeled as non-heat-resistant.

5.3.7 Leakage resistance

Disposable tableware such as boxes, bowls, and cups designed for holding liquids shall not leak after the test, shall not show any seepage, and shall not exhibit significant deformation.

NOTE. No requirements are imposed on disposable tableware such as boxes, bowls, and cups labeled as not designed for holding liquids, nor on other disposable tableware without a liquid- holding function.

6.1 Standard atmospheres for sample conditioning and testing

Tests shall be carried out under the standard atmospheres and normal deviation range specified in GB/T 2918, with a temperature of (23 ± 2) °C and a relative humidity of (50 ± 10) %. The conditioning time shall not be less than 4 h. The test shall be carried out under these conditions.

6.2 Appearance and structure

Observe in the laboratory using a 45° angled spotlight.

6.3 Volume deviation

According to the specifications of plastic disposable tableware, take a graduated cylinder of the corresponding capacity, add water at (23 ± 1) °C (distilled water or deionized water) to the sample container until the highest level in the container is level with the container opening, carefully pour the water into the graduated cylinder, read the value and record it.

During the test, take 3 samples for inspection, and take the average value of the inspection results of the 3 samples as the final inspection result.
