When cable materials burn, they can release halogen-bearing gases, and this standard is concerned with measuring low levels of halogen content in those gases by ion chromatography. It is Part 3 of the series on tests on gases evolved during combustion of materials taken from cables or optical fibre cables. Readers will chiefly be materials laboratories, cable and compound manufacturers, quality managers and certification bodies that need to demonstrate low-halogen behaviour of insulation, sheathing and other cable components.

The method addresses analysis of the evolved gases rather than the cable design itself, so it is typically used alongside other fire-performance tests for wire and cable products. It adopts an international standard and is a recommended national standard prepared under the China Electrical Equipment Industry Association. It takes effect on 1 April 2027.
