2 Terms

2.0.1 primary crushing

The process in which the main raw materials in carbon material production, such as green petroleum coke or anthracite, are crushed to the particle size required by the various types of calcining. It also includes the process in which large lumps of green products, baked products or graphitized products returned to the flow in production are crushed to a particle size suitable for conveying by general-purpose conveying equipment.

2.0.2 calcining

The process in which various carbonaceous raw materials are heat-treated at high temperature to drive off their moisture and volatile matter and correspondingly improve the physical and chemical properties of the raw materials.

2.0.3 middle crushing

The process in which calcined petroleum coke or anthracite and the various materials returned to the flow undergo a second or third crushing to reach the particle size required by the dry material formula.

2.0.4 grinding

The process in which the main raw materials, such as calcined petroleum coke or anthracite, are milled to the particle size required for proportioning.

2.0.5 screening

The process in which calcined petroleum coke, anthracite, etc. and the various materials returned to the flow are classified during production to obtain the various particle sizes required for proportioning or for the next process step in production.

2.0.6 pitch melting

The process in which solid coal tar pitch used as a binder or impregnant is converted into liquid pitch by indirect heating.

2.0.7 mixing

The process in which carbonaceous dry materials of various size fractions in specified proportions and a fixed quantity of binder are mixed and kneaded at a certain temperature into a plastic paste.

2.0.8 forming

The process in which carbon paste undergoes plastic deformation in a mould under the action of external pressure and alternating vibration force, finally becoming a green product with certain external dimensions and relatively high density.

2.0.9 baking

The process in which green products are heat-treated at high temperature under the protection of packing material, so that the pitch is carbonized and forms an organic bond with the aggregate and fines, achieving the required physical and chemical properties.

2.0.10 impregnating

The process in which, at a certain temperature, liquid impregnant is forced into the pores of carbon products by first evacuating and then pressurizing, so as to increase their density.

2.0.11 rebaking

The process in which impregnated baked products are baked again so that the impregnant that has penetrated into the pores of the baked products is carbonized.

2.0.12 graphitizing

The process in which semi-finished products after baking or rebaking are heated electrically in a graphitizing furnace to a high temperature above 2500°C, so that the size of the carbon network crystallites increases, the interlayer spacing of the lattice decreases and the lattice constant approaches that of natural graphite, thereby obtaining the physical and chemical properties required for the products.

2.0.13 machining

The process in which semi-finished products after baking or graphitizing are machined to the shape and dimensions required for the finished products, producing carbon products that meet the requirements.
