Scope
GB 16170-1996 is the English-translated version of 汽车定置噪声限值.
GB 16170 sets the noise limits for a road vehicle measured standing still, with the engine at a defined speed and the microphone at a fixed position near the exhaust outlet.
The stationary test exists because it can be done at a roadside or in a testing station without the space a drive-by test needs, which makes it the method used in periodic inspection and in enforcement against tampered exhausts.
Still in force after nearly thirty years. Issued on 7 March 1996 by the State Environmental Protection Administration, in force since 1 January 1997.
